Presidential Ticket: PDP finally gives it to Yar’Adua

NOT moved by the adoption of Governor Umar Musa Yar'Adua as the choice of the 28 governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the 12 other aspirants insisted that voting take place. But the voting remained a likely formality, as the governors, who pranced about the venue like gladiators, appeared in charge.
At a point, some of them including Rivers' Peter Odili, Ebonyi's Sam Egwu and other governor-aspirants before Friday evening, went round each of the 36 States' stand with their anointed choice - Musa Yar'Adua - waving and being shown as their choice.
However, even as the governors queued behind one of their own, Senators and members of House of Representatives resolved to back the former National Security Adviser to President Obasanjo, General Aliyu Muhammed Gusau.
The general who remains the main contender to Yar'Adua, was also expected to benefit from the votes of delegates from his state Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto and parts of Kaduna. This was expected to create an upset to Yar'Adua's 'already decided anointing' as a Senator put it yesterday.
And in apparent response to loud insinuations by the 11 other contestants at the Square, three of the governors - Victor Attah, Sam Egwu and George Akume - said they were not intimidated to back Yar'Adua. Said Akume of Benue: "It was the decision of the governors since they asked us to look within. We looked (and) we found out that he is honest, has integrity and we decided for him."
Egwu of Ebonyi said: "We were not intimidated; the party zoned the slot to the North; we are all adults and nobody intimidated us."
The 12 aspirants that stood for the election were Yar'Adua, Gen. Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, Ambassador Ralph Uwueche and Prof. Jerry Gana, Admiral Mike Okhai Akhigbe, Mrs. Sarah Jibril, Chief Rochas Okorocha, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and Chief A.K Horsfall.
